IPL 2016 has been just another season filled with glamour,
brilliance, consistency and passion that the tournament has made itself a
spectacle of since its inception. we look at the records and rare instances
that have occurred till now amidst all of the 60 matches played across the
season. This really has been a record breaking season!
#14. Most Runs in a season- Virat Kohli (RCB)
In a season that has been nothing short of Bradmanesque for
Virat Kohli, he has plundered the bones out of every bowling attack, compiling
973 runs throughout the season in the 15 matches that he has played, with 11
fifty plus scores (the most in a season) that includes 4 centuries. He has been
at his destructive best blazing away 36 sixes ( the second most) and 78 fours
(the second most) being an image of consistency, averaging 83.5 (the most in
the season).
#13. Most 100s in a season- Virat Kohli (RCB)
Almost shattering every batting record through his magnificence,
Kohli has notched up 4 centuries this season, with a high score of 113 against
KXIP, which was also his fastest ton, notched up in 47 balls. Gujarat Lions had
to suffer most from the wrath of Kohli as he bashed them with 2 centuries in 3
innings with a best of 109. His other century came against deflated RPS, his
only while chasing.
#12. Highest Partnership- Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (RCB)
#12. Highest Partnership- Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (RCB)
On this torrid day for the bowers of the Gujarat Lions, these
two contemporary geniuses mercilessly marauded the bowlers in a boundary
studded spree, as they notched up 229 runs together in just 16 overs. Coming in
at 19-1 a the onset of the 5th over, these two batted right till the
penultimate ball of the innings, as each of them notched up tons and played one
of a kind innings.
#11. Highest aggregate partnership runs- Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (RCB)
#11. Highest aggregate partnership runs- Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (RCB)
When two of the best batsmen in the world get paired up, we are bound
to see some effortless, stylish and dominating performances. AB de Villiers and
Virat Kohli have been a pain to every bowling attack that has proved
indomitable, as they have aggregated 939 partnership runs paired up on 13
occasions. Such has been the extent of their dominance that they have added 5
hundred plus stands along with 2 half century ones.
#10. Most runs scored of the last 5- RCB vs GL
#10. Most runs scored of the last 5- RCB vs GL
The two delightfully destructive Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers
came together during their unforgettable 229 run stand to demolish the
debilitated GL bowlers and pummel 112 runs off their last 5 overs. This
spectacle of class, elegance, power and force saw them add 30 runs for 2
consecutive overs and 75 runs in the last 3. This overpowering assault saw
them smash 14 sixes and 4 fours off these overs.
#9. Most runs scored in the last over to win a match-RPS vs KXIP (23)
#9. Most runs scored in the last over to win a match-RPS vs KXIP (23)
It was technically an inconsequential match with the teams
trying to avoid last place, but MS Dhoni was playing for his reputation. With
23 runs needed off the last 6 and no reliable batsman on the other end, it was
all but over. However, Dhoni pummelled listless Axar Patel for 16 runs off the
last 3, including 2 sixes off the final balls with a signature helicopter shot
to clinch an improbable victory, even after playing 2 dot balls in that over
beating the previous best of 21.
#8. Most percentage won while chasing- Gujarat Lion (80%)
#8. Most percentage won while chasing- Gujarat Lion (80%)
With a fairytale season coming to an end for the new franchise
after heart breaking performances, GL will take heart from the fact that they
dominated the league stage after topping the table, and were almost invincible
while batting second. Winning 8 out off 10 matches while chasing, with the
biggest chase being 196 against RPS, and their only failure coming against RCB
and KXIP with their conversion rate being spectacular.
#7. The most competitive season
#7. The most competitive season
Living upto its expectations of keeping the fans on the edge of
their seats, 6 teams were vying for the 4 spots in the playoffs right till the
last 3 league games. There was only a 4 point difference between the top team
and the team coming 6th. 18 points (9 wins) were the lowest points sufficient
enough to top the table for Gujarat in the 9 seasons and Punjab finished last
with the most amount of points (8) mustered to end at this spot along with DD
in 2013.
#6. Two batsman scoring 100s in one innings- Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (RCB vs GL)
#6. Two batsman scoring 100s in one innings- Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (RCB vs GL)
A rare occurrence, but an expected one with these two greats
getting going, occurred when Kohli and De Villiers both notched up respective
tons during the marathon 229 run stand vs GL. De Villiers outscored Kohli,
blazing 129 off 52, but Kohli belatedly joined the party with 109 off 55.
#5. Biggest ever IPL win- 144 runs (RCB vs GL)
#5. Biggest ever IPL win- 144 runs (RCB vs GL)
On this overwhelming day for Gujarat their batting also failed
to turn up, as they succumbed to a lowly 104 chasing an improbable 248 for
victory. Nothing went right as the lions were tamed in this match as a Virat
and ABD assault was complimented by a 4 wicket haul by Jordan that demolished
GL by 144 runs, breaking a record standing since 2008 when RCB were on the
receiving end of a 140 run drubbing.
#4. Most catches in a season- AB de Villiers (19) (RCB)
#4. Most catches in a season- AB de Villiers (19) (RCB)
The superman lived up to his superhuman reputation in the field
as well, with his bucket hands pouching 19 catches in the 15 matches up to this
season. He was a force in a the outfield at long on and long off, and his best
effort came against KXIP with 3 catches in an innings and he pouched 2 in an
innings a record 6 times.
#3. Best figures by a spinner- Adam Zampa
(6-19) (RPS vs SRH)
In only his second game of the season, he was an enigma to the
clueless SRH batsman accounting for 6 of them, including picking up 3 wickets
in his last over. He was summoned at the death by MS, and varied his pace,
length flight on a spinner friendly wicket to reap the reward, falling
agonisingly short of the 6-14 for Sohail Tanvir in 2008.
#2. Lowest average for taking more than 10 wickets in a season- Adam Zampa (9.58) (RPS)
#2. Lowest average for taking more than 10 wickets in a season- Adam Zampa (9.58) (RPS)
A valued addition, although belatedly to the RPS side, Zampa was
a shining light for Pune in an otherwise disappointing season. Having played
just 5 matches, Zampa was Pune’s leading wicket taker, even ahead of R Ashwin
who played all matches. He took 12 wickets conceding just 6.76 per over (second
best economy for Pune) at an unreal average of 9.58, the best ever in the IPL.
His best performance undoubtedly came with a 6 wicket haul against SRH.
#1. Most wicket taken by an Indian bowler in a season- Bhuvneshwar Kumar (23)(SRH)
#1. Most wicket taken by an Indian bowler in a season- Bhuvneshwar Kumar (23)(SRH)
In a fairytale season for SRH, Bhuvi has lead the pack with the
purple cap, and has been the most reliable bowler at the death, as well as with
the new ball for SRH. His best performance came with a 4-fer against GL in the
league stage. He has equalled Mohit Sharma’s and RP Singh’s 23 wicket
aggregate. His wickets have come at an average of 20 and economy of 7.5.
